The goal of DICOTOMIA is to develop software (prototyped as a mobile application (APP) or as a downloadable program for computers) capable of measuring, in real-time, the resonance between two or more individuals during any in-person or virtual interaction (a conversation, video chat, meeting, or other forms of gatherings), based on a predetermined degree of consonance identified beforehand.
The software will be able to deliver profiling and labeling results on an individual level, represented in an easily understandable format (e.g., a value scale, quantitative diagram, or a simple traffic light system), derived from the development and application of systems that detect proxemics and dynamic elements, such as facing, posturing, and tuning.
The profiling process involves an initial phase of assessing the consonance of the individuals, followed by re-evaluation based on the degree of sharing and/or alignment with a given project/process as part of the resonance qualification phase.
- Algorithm for detecting and measuring dyadic consonance (between two entities) or contextual consonance (among multiple entities);
- Algorithm for detecting and measuring dyadic resonance (between two entities) or contextual resonance (among multiple entities).
The tourism sector has been identified as the main application domain due to its high cognitive and emotional involvement of various stakeholders, where the quality of the lived experience often depends on the level of understanding and immersion of the individual tourist, as well as the value attributed to different phases of the tourism experience.
The introduction of a new functionality (compatible with the operating systems already in use by tourism facilities) would improve the quality of content delivered, monitor engagement and understanding levels during the tourism experience, and help define any corrective/improvement decisions, potentially in real-time, for the benefit of the entire community.
is to classify incoming clients according to their non-verbal communication activities, using tools and algorithms developed from previous project work, in order to increase their satisfaction and provide better services. This will involve assessing the degree of consonance and resonance, and adjusting service levels based on the level of agreement or disagreement. Clients will be given a questionnaire to measure consonance before interacting with the cultural asset/place. Following this, using proxemical detection tools, the degree of agreement between the individual’s consonance, as indicated in the questionnaire, and what is revealed through proxemical labeling, will be evaluated.

– The needs to be met
DICOTOMIA arises from the need, felt by both individuals and organizations, to address the increasing complexity in all the contexts in which we operate today, recognizing that the available methodologies and tools are not always adequate. Through the project activities detailed below, we aim to offer a possible theoretical and practical response to the complexity and volatility of current socio-economic scenarios. This is especially true in the managerial field, where there is a growing need to identify new models, schemes, and tools capable of making decision-making and, even more importantly, problem-solving processes adequate for the ongoing changes. Consequently, the difficulty in dealing with the current complexity is largely due to the lack of appropriate “interpretative frameworks”—frameworks capable of supporting the interpretation and understanding of emerging dynamics.
In this context, DICOTOMIA aims to provide an innovative and concrete response to these needs. The detection of consonance helps identify “how” and, possibly, “how much” two or more individuals, in a given context, are in harmony (consonant) and, therefore, more or less inclined to participate in achieving a specific goal, even if the methods for achieving that goal are not always clear upfront. Specifically, the project focuses on the tourism and cultural sector, a critical area for the socio-economic development of the Campania region, whose enormous potential often struggles to find appropriate recognition within the national and international landscape.
In this regard, the project—by investigating the conditions, paths, and elements capable of influencing the cognitive and value alignment between tourists, the cultural and tourist heritage of the Campania region, and the actors directly involved in delivering the contents of that heritage (front-office personnel)—aims to meet a wide variety of needs, primarily those related to market demand, where tourists often seek a more “personalized” contact with cultural heritage to fully immerse themselves in the tourism experience. At the same time, the project also aims to meet the needs of those involved in delivering tourism services, who increasingly feel the need to implement presentation and communication approaches that are more aligned with the expectations, desires, and demands of the various target groups they serve.
– The production and market objectives, and the expected project outcomes
Considering tourism as the reference market, the goal is to meet a wide variety of needs primarily related to demand, where tourists often seek a more “personalized” contact with the cultural heritage to fully immerse themselves in the tourism experience. At the same time, the project also aims to meet the needs of those involved in delivering tourism services, who increasingly feel the need to implement approaches to presenting and delivering the cultural tourism offer that are more aligned with the expectations, desires, and demands of the various target groups they serve.
